Kensington Recreation Committee Minutes
January 7, 2010
Approved on January 28, 2010
Meeting began at 6:30pm at the Library
In attendance: Kay Christie Cardoni, Cengiz Satir, Donna Carter
Guest: Marilyn Niles
Minutes to the December 3rd, 2009 meeting were approved.
Candlelight Stroll /Tree Lighting - the Tree Lighting started at 3 pm at Sawyer Park; about 50 parents and children attended. We set up the tree decorating supplies and the cookies, marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Mike got the popcorn machine popping; which was a big hit. We started the fire pit and used charcoal (instead of wood) which worked beautifully to keep people warm. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the fire truck and spoke to all of the children. The Candlelight Stroll started at 5 pm at the Grange/Library. The police department had two cruisers there with flashing lights following the group through town. The building lights were illuminated as we sang Christmas carols.
Suggestions for next year: the need for better and earlier advertising (website/school/signs), advertise the time that Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive (on the fire truck!), make it two separate events (different days or different times), the Stroll needs a music leader and/or instruments.
Father/Daughter Dance- Dawn sent an email on January 7th updating the committee and will provide a further update at our next meeting.
KES Activities - We need to look at the programs to see if they are workable. We will make a decision as to whether to maintain the programs based on enrollment.
In the mean time: Hannah Eaves – (Special Education Teaching Assistant at KES) needs to be paid by the fees collected through KES activities. Dawn will update us at the next meeting.
Ski Program - Donna stated she will follow-up with John Clark to update the committee at the next meeting and to get the current list of participants for this program.
Winter Classic –Cengiz is starting to work on this event, he discussed having open skate and a hockey session at the ice rink. Donna will arrange the snow sculpting (and perhaps, bring in extra snow). Cengiz and Donna will provide additional information at the next meeting.
Ice skating rink - The plugs have been purchased for 2 of the drains at the ice rink and it appears that they will work. There are 5 gallon buckets under the other 2 drains, but the grates are standing up. Cones are needed to indicate that caution is needed near that area. The other 2 grates have rubber balls in them to stop the water. A spigot has been temporarily installed; it will have to be replaced because it was ordered in error. A hose of 150 feet and a reel (to store the hose) is needed for water to make the ice. A sprinkler was also discussed. Cengiz is working with Mike to set up the lights. Harold has been maintaining a path through the snow and has been shoveling snow off the ice rink. Once the ice has set an ice rink schedule will need to be set: Monday through Thursday 4 – 8pm with lights, Friday through Saturday 5-10pm with lights, and Sunday 4-8pm with lights.
Web page - The website needs to be updated to include real time, the updated registration form, an email address to connect to all of us and links to the Library, KES, CMS, and EHS.
Kensington Trails – Kay met with the Conservation Commission on December 8th. Donna will update the committee on the trails.
Budget – Budget was discussed and Kay will send an email to the BOS to meet with the Recreation committee. The Recreation Committee would like to understand the budget and the recreation revolver account. Donna will check the recreation revolver account.
By-Laws/Procedures/Mission statement/Roles – this project will take priority in the month of January.
Summer Camp- Kay discussed Summer Camp and Marilyn Niles graciously agreed to read the Procedures and Policy book for summer camp, and assist with this project.
