September 25, 2009
Approved on October 8, 2009
Meeting began at 9:00am at Sawyer Park
In attendance: Kay Christie Cardoni, Cengiz Satir, Donna Carter, Dawn Perry
Minutes to the September 10, 2009 meeting were read and approved.
A new/updated web page was discussed for the Recreation Committee for our events and activities. Paul Lovvik stated he would assist the Recreation Committee in setting up a website. We will continue to look at other websites and come up with specific suggestions and graphics.
The ‘Candlelight Walk’ or Holiday Stoll was discussed by Kay. A meeting date will be determined shortly to discuss the specifics of this event with the Kensington Library and the Kensington Congregational Church. Donna stated that she may be able to find the Carol books that have been used in the past for this event (100 books). Dawn stated in the event that the books could not be located she would start looking into developing new Carol books.
The Halloween Party will be scheduled in October. Per Donna; there has not been any news with respect to a contribution or donation to this event – Donna will keep us posted and may have information next week. Donna has organized this event in the past and will start arranging activities on a tentative basis. Further discussion was tabled until our next meeting; Donna should have information by that time on how/where to proceed with this event. Friday, October 23 was discussed as a possible date as well as Sunday, October 25th.
With respect to the Summer Camp, a meeting will be arranged to review the Summer Camp procedures with Kathy Cook (Kathy has been away for the last 2 weeks). An email will be sent to the Recreation Committee once a date has been set and everyone will be invited to attend. Donna suggested again that our next meeting serve as a possible time for the review. Mike Motherway sent an email suggesting a procedure for ‘closure’ of the Summer Camp activities such as; taking the tarps on the pavilion down and putting them away (Dawn offered to take the tarps down) and for organizing the Summer Camp supplies in the bunker/cages (Kay offered to organize the bunker).
Kay attended the BOS meeting and gave a brief update of the Recreation Committee events and activities. Dawn Perry was approved as a Recreation Committee member.
Skateboard Park – Cengiz received a plan from O’Brian and Sons and presented it to the Park Trust. We would purchase the equipment and install it per O’Brian’s recommendation. The equipment would be purchased now and installed in the spring.
Ice skating rink - Bell and Flynn designed the rink – Cengiz met with the Park Trust and Mike D. will look into the specifics on ‘how to plug the rink’. Cengiz will then work on a dry run to see if the plugs indeed will work. Dawn mentioned Terry McLaughlin – (a professional ice rink builder) and perhaps contacting him to help understand how to properly flood and maintain the rink for the winter. Cengiz will follow up on quotes for ice hockey nets (Fillbricks/Rinks) Follow-up is needed on how to maintain a path through the snow for its use; specifically the cost to plow (parking/path/rink), keeping the ice in good use by flooding from the well, and the use/cost of park lights. Cengiz/Donna will continue the process of looking into the rink issues.
Donna continues to have concerns with respect to fundraising. She is not comfortable with fundraising as it relates to the Recreation Committee.
The Ski Program was discussed by John Clark and Kay on September 24th at the Kensington Library.
The details of Bradford Ski Program as provided by John are:
Specifically, the Recreation Committee will work with John to get the proper forms out and to keep costs down.
Donna presented information for the purchase of a granite bench for Nancy Roffman in recognition of her 30 years of service. The cost of the granite bench $250, set-up $100, delivery $50 – Total cost: $ 609. A tree was also discussed. Donna will look in an estimate for an ornamental tree.
Engraving pavers for a stone path was also discussed as a possible fundraising idea by Dawn and Cengiz.
The Committee will need to submit our 2010 budget by October 15th. Kay will propose a budget at the next meeting.
