Kensington Recreation Committee Minutes

September 10, 2009

Approved on September 25, 2009

Meeting began at 6:30 pm at the Kensington Library

In attendance: Kay Christie Cardoni, Cengiz Satir, Donna Carter, Dawn Perry

Guest: Russell Perry

Minutes to the August 24, 2009 meeting were read and approved.

Dawn discussed the ‘Father/Daughter Dance’ it had been tentatively scheduled for November, but Dawn made a good case to move it to February 12th, closer to Valentines Day. The location would be the Grange Hall.

A new or updated web page was discussed for the Recreation Committee, we will continue to look at other web sites and come up with specific suggestions for our web site.  A town wide letter to the community on up coming events was also discussed.

The ‘Candlelight Walk’ or Holiday Stoll was discussed by Kay.  The Kensington Library indicated they wish to be included in the walk and the Kensington Congregational Church stated they would like to work with us to have the walk be a community event.  Having children make ornaments with popcorn and having cider and hot chocolate was also discussed.

The Halloween Party will be scheduled in October. Per Donna; Mr. Lewis will not be available to discuss any contribution or donation to this event until after September 20th. Donna has organized this event in the past and will start arranging on a tentative basis- the magic show, the police department contribution, Rosencrantz for the hay wagons, the volunteers for the ‘Haunting’ (maybe Boy Scouts?) tent, lights, heaters, stage, and candy and prizes.  There was a discussion as to where the event will be held- at the Lewis property or the Park. The discussion was tabled until the next meeting; Donna should have information by that time on how/where to proceed with this event. Friday, October 23 was discussed as a possible date.

With respect to the Summer Camp, Donna suggested inviting Kathy Cook to our next meeting to get a final summery and de-briefing.  Kay will send Kathy an email.

Russell Perry gave an update from the Board of Selectmen.  The BOS have appointed a volunteer position to run Sawyer Park and the Concession Stand. The position has been filled by Selectman Mike Motherway. This position will be responsible for park operations, scheduling, budget, fees, and maintenance (a contact when things break). The Recreation Committee was in approval of the position.

Russell also recommended that a Recreation Committee member attend the BOS meetings to keep the BOS and the community updated on events.

Donna suggested that Recreation Committee member take turns attending BOS meetings, or rotate attendance at BOS meetings.

Cengiz looked into the Skateboard Park – he received a plan from O’Brian and Sons. We would purchase the equipment and install it per O’Brian’s recommendation. The equipment has a 15 year warranty. Cengiz will speak with Mike Motherway and update the Park Trust.

The next topic was the ice skating rink - Bell and Flynn designed the rink, we need to understand how to properly flood and maintain the rink for the winter. Donna mentioned that Mike D. or Bruce S. may have information from the plumber on how to flood the rink. Cengiz and Donna will speak with the Trust. They will also follow-up with information on how to maintain a path through the snow for its use; specifically the cost to plow (parking/path/rink) Cengiz will continue the process of looking into the rink issues.

Donna had questions with respect to fundraising. She would like to look into this issue with the State NH.

The Committee briefly reviewed the Recreation budget; we need to submit our 2010 budget by October 15th.  Kay will propose a budget at the next meeting.

Dawn outlined our future meeting dates as: 9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 11/5, tentative- 11/19, 12/3, tentative -12/10
