Kensington Recreation Committee Minutes
October 8, 2008
Approved 11-12-08
Meeting began at 7:30 at the Town Hall
In attendance: Donna Carter, Kathy Cook, Dave Macek, John Andreasse, Mary Jane Solomon
Minutes to September 10th meeting approved.
Discussion of Nancy Roffman’s official resignation. After 25+ years of serving on the Rec. Committee it was felt some sort of recognition was due. Cost of engraving a stone to be placed at the beginning of the trail will be looked into, along with a plaque.
Dave presented a letter from Doug Merrill stating his Eagle Scout Project was completed. We are all very pleased with his work and will look into an appropriate way to recognize his efforts.
6 ‘Reserved’ signs to be used at the park have been ordered costing $360. Where to keep them was discussed. The Town Hall is an option, but most events are on weekends when the town offices are closed.
An official thank you letter to the Lewis Family was mentioned. KES is planning a school wide picnic. The thought was to get a photo of all the kids at the park to include with the letter of thanks.
Brief discussion of boardwalk and trail work through woods below fields. Three bids are needed. Dave and MJ will try for this for the next meeting. Conservation Commission is ok with it as long as nothing is placed into the ground through the wet areas. Rob Garneau has offered a book on trail construction.
Donna reported the Haunted Hayride is scheduled for Oct. 26th. Mr. Lewis’ donation has been received. Drivers are set. Donna is looking into new volunteers to do the haunting.
KYAA has the winter basketball schedule set and on the KYAA website.
Tree lighting and skating (weather permitting) was discussed. Hockey nets will be assembled and placed on multipurpose court when basketball hoops come down. Flooding should happen ideally after first snow. A date for the tree lighting will be determined after contacting church members about their Holiday Stroll.
Hosting a sledding party on Hodges Field was discussed. This could also include snow shoeing and cross country skiing on the trails. This location was chosen rather than Kimball’s this year to alert those who don’t know that this is town property and is available for recreation by residents. Again a date will be set depending on the weather.
Kathy mentioned a statewide camp organization which costs a small fee but is a great venue for getting answers to questions and other valuable info relating to our camp program. All were in favor of joining.
John brought up the Exeter flag football program and that he had just learned Brickyard Field was closed due to EEE. He asked about the possibility of offering our baseball and softball fields to this program. Ages are 6 – 12. Many Kensington youth participate. Hours would be 8 – 12 with games on the hour. All were agreeable to making the offer
Meeting adjourned. Next meeting November 12.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Jane Solomon
