Recreation Committee Minutes

Special Meeting April 16, 2008

Meeting began at 6:00 at the Town hall

In attendance: Nancy Roffman, Kathy Cook, Dave Macek, John Andreasse, Donna Carter, Mary Jane Solomon

Meeting was held for the purpose of selecting a Rec. member to recommend for filling the vacancy on the Sawyer Park Board of Trustees as requested by the Board of Selectmen. Lengthy discussion regarding problems with the way the trust has been operating and concerns with several Rec. members as to whether anyone would be able to work within the current configuration. Donna was the only one willing to join but would need to step down as a Rec. member because she felt unable to commit to attending Rec. meetings regularly and hasn’t in the past.

John made a motion to withhold appointing a member until another Selectman steps down from the Trust. Seconded by Dave. Discussion followed. Conditions stated in the Agreement indicated Selectmen do make final decisions regarding policies so would not lose any power or control by stepping down from the Trust. This would allow a citizens’ rep. and a Rec. member to be on the Trust. If the selectmen did not agree, some felt it didn’t matter if it was not a Rec. member who filled the vacancy since it would only be a small voice. Others felt strongly it should be a Rec. member regardless. It was suggested a letter be written to the Selectmen asking for one of the two remaining members on the Trust step down stating Rec. would be unable to recommend a member to join otherwise. Vote on writing such a letter to be presented at the Selectmen’s meeting with four in favor, one opposed, and one abstained. Majority voted in favor. John will write a draft. A final copy will be written by Monday, April 21^st. MJ stated she would be prepared to take the position should the Selectmen deny our request.
