New Energy Code Requirement

The NH Legislature adopted a state wide building code in 2002. One of the new requirements is that all new structures, all renovated structures and all additions meet the International Energy Code (IECC 2000) before a building permit is issued. Since Kensington has only a part time building inspector, the Public Utilities Commission will approve the applications. You can find more information about energy codes along with the energy code applications at Public Utilities Commission

Follow the "Energy Codes" link on the left hand side of the page which will take you to the Energy Codes home page where applications for compliance are available. Please note, there are two separate applications - one for new construction and the other for additions, sunrooms and renovations. Applications are also available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.

New Office Hours for the Building Inspector

Depending on the need for his services, Bill plans to hold “office hours”

every Monday evening coinciding with the Board of Selectmen’s meetings.

Bring your plans and questions between the hours of 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

Building permit costs are $.50/sq ft for living areas and $.10/sq ft for non-living areas. The minimum cost is $50.00. Oil/gas permits are $25.00 each.

Town Rights-of-Way

All residents are reminded to contact the town hall if they are planning any activities or excavations within the town's rights-of-way. The right-of-way extends beyond the pavement for drainage purposes, etc., and may very somewhat from road to road. It's a good idea to check ahead and make sure that your project won't be impacted.

The 2005 Town vote approved the adoption of the mandatory State Building Code adopted by the New Hampshire legislature during the 2002 session: International Building Code 2000, Plumbing Code 2000, Mechanical Code 2000, Energy Conservation Code 2000 and the National Electric Code 1999? These codes are currently in effect and do not amend, repeal or supersede any local ordinance, bylaw, code or regulation unless such local ordinance is less stringent than the state building code. All code books are in the town hall office for public review.

Building Permit Packets are available at the Town Hall during regular Business hours -8:30 am to 1:30 pm M-Th, from Denise or Betty. Completed packets, including driveway permit applications, electric permits (costs are on the back) and oil/gas burner permits should be returned to the Town Hall with a check to cover each packet. Bill Grant is available Monday nights coinciding with the Selectmen's meetings as noted above and can review your packets at that time. If you cannot meet with him that night, please return the completed packet to Denise or Betty to be processed as soon as possible. The Planning Board approves the driveway permits at their third Tuesday of the month meetings, thus the completed application should be given to Bill in advance of the meeting. The Board of Selectmen approve building permits at their first and third Monday meetings of the month unless scheduled otherwise due to holidays, vacations, etc.
